President of the European Council Charles Michel said on Thursday that during a recent phone call with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev he said that the latter "cannot have territorial claims to Armenia”, Russia’s TASS news agency reported.

"I spoke with President Aliyev two days ago and I clearly told him that he cannot have territorial claims to Armenia. This must be said out loud and the mutual recognition of the territorial integrity [of Armenia and Azerbaijan] must be guaranteed," he said upon his arrival at the European Political Community summit in Granada, Spain.

Michel refused to comment on Aliyev's decision to pull out of EU-mediated talks with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the sidelines of the summit.

"I will tell him everything personally what I think about it," the EU diplomat added.

Michel said the EU mediation between Armenia and Azerbaijan is aimed at protecting EU interests in the region.
