Israel-Palestine escalation will inevitably affect Armenia, expert says
Varuzhan Geghamyan, an academic and expert on Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, claims the ongoing escalation between Israel and Palestine will inevitably affect Armenia.
The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas launched the biggest attack on Israel in years on Saturday in a surprise assault that combined gunmen crossing into several Israeli towns with a heavy barrage of rockets fired from the Gaza Strip, Reuters reported.
As warning sirens wailed across southern and central Israel, including in Jerusalem, Israel’s military said it was on a war footing and the defense minister said the Iran-backed Hamas had made a “grave mistake” by declaring war on Israel.
“Not only are we, Armenia, part of the same region – the Middle East – as Israel and Palestine, but also we are linked with each other by distinct geopolitical ties,” the expert wrote on Facebook.
“What is happening and has happened in Armenia, particularly on the Artsakh-Syunik front, is part of the same big game as the ongoing developments in Ukraine, Israel and Palestine. In this regard, it is enough to recall that Israel is helping Azerbaijan and arming it against us in an attempt to neutralize the Iranian threat in Palestine, Syria and elsewhere.
“Consequently, what is happening in Israel/Palestine, which seems “distant and unattractive” to us, will directly and indirectly affect us,” Geghamyan stated.
