Armenia International Music Festival featuring music by Armenian and foreign composers
Roeland Henkens, a Belgian conductor based in Oslo, is among the guest conductors participating in the Armenia International Music Festival. He recently led the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra in performing works by two contemporary composers: "Choreographic Pieces" by Gagik Hovunts, followed by two compositions for violin and orchestra, "Phoenix Fantasy" and "Verdiana" by Alexey Shor. The world-renowned violinist Marc Bouchkov shared the stage with the orchestra as soloist, the festival press office told Panorama.am on Thursday.
This was the conductor's first visit to Armenia, as well as his first collaboration with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra. Roeland Henkens was enthusiastic about sharing his experience with the country and its culture.
“I am also delighted to present a work by an Armenian composer. The "Choreographic Pieces" by Gagik Hovunts include numerous solo sections which demand individual talent and unaccompanied performances. This work creates a very warm atmosphere which makes it particularly meaningful to share with audiences today. Together with the celebrated violinist Marc Bouchkov, we will present two works by Alexey Shor. Interestingly, our first encounter took place in Armenia, even though both of us are from Belgium. This is also the first time I am presenting Shor’s music. His Phoenix Fantasy is a virtuosic composition and I'm delighted to have the opportunity to present it in Armenia. Shor’s “Verdiana” comprises three parts, each possessing its own unique charm,” Roeland Henkens said.
Talking about the collaboration with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, the conductor emphasized that it is a warm ensemble with bright personalities. According to the conductor, the orchestra is receptive to his ideas and suggestions, which fosters collaboration.
