Levon Kocharyan's prosecution politically motivated, lawyers insist
The prosecution of Levon Kocharyan, the son of former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan, is “entirely politically motivated”, his lawyers insist.
Levon Kocharyan was arrested during anti-government protests in Yerevan in September. He has been charged with assaulting police officers.
"Judge Masis Melkonyan cannot impartially deal with the case due to his political activities in the past, the exceptional hatred of his political team's leader towards second President Robert Kocharyan," lawyer Alexander Kochubaev told reporters on Wednesday.
His comments came before a first instance court in Yerevan’s Nor Nork district started hearing a motion to extend Levon Kocharyan’s arrest.
His other lawyer, Erik Aleksanyan, claimed Kocharyan’s arrest and prosecution was part of legal nihilism rampant in the country.
"This is judicial lawlessness, which we have witnessed in various criminal cases, and proceedings against Levon Kocharyan are no exception,” he added.
