Armenian government grants refugee status to displaced people from Nagorno-Karabakh
The Armenian government has granted “temporary protection” to people forcibly displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh), formalizing their status of refugees.
The decision was adopted at a cabinet meeting on Thursday.
Those granted “temporary protection status” will have an opportunity to apply for Armenian citizenship and receive pensions, Justice Minister Grigor Minasyan said.
They will be entitled to exercise their rights under the law on refugees and international conventions, he added.
More than 100,000 Armenians were forced to flee their homes in Nagorno-Karabakh in the wake of its violent seizure by Azerbaijan in mid-September.
