Armenian MP unconvinced by Baku's assurances on Syunik
Armenian opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan has dismissed Azerbaijan’s recent assurances that it has no plans to attack Armenia’s Syunik Province to open a land corridor to Nakhichevan.
A senior Azerbaijani official said on Wednesday that Azerbaijan is no longer interested in securing a land corridor through Armenia to Nakhichevan and will instead discuss the issue with its southern neighbour Iran.
"Azerbaijan had no plans to seize Zangezur," Hikmet Hajiyev, a top foreign policy adviser to Iliyev, told Reuters.
"After the two sides failed to agree on its opening, the project has lost its attractiveness for us — we can do this with Iran instead," he said.
In a social media post on Saturday, Abrahamyan, secretary of the opposition Pativ Unem faction, said the statements “further exacerbate the Azerbaijani threats”.
"First, it is not ruled out that Azerbaijan is attempting to ensure Armenia is taken by surprise by a sudden attack. Second, Baku makes it clear that it will solve this issue peacefully,” he wote on Facebook, adding Azerbaijan has made no such assurances regarding Armenia's other provinces.
