Armen Ashotyan greeted with applause in Yerevan court
Armenian opposition politician Armen Ashotyan was greeted with applause and cheers in a courtroom of the Anti-Corruption Court in Yerevan on Monday.
Ashotyan, deputy chair of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), was arrested on 16 June on charges of abuse of power and money laundering strongly denied by him as politically motivated.
At today's court hearing, his lawyer Ruben Melikyan requested the presiding judge's recusal, questioning his impartiality.
"The circumstances that were revealed at the previous two hearings in the case raise reasonable doubts on the impartiality of the presiding judge," the lawyer said.
