Russia offered Armenia ways to circumvent Rome Statute – Foreign Ministry
Before Armenia ratified the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Moscow had offered Yerevan ways to circumvent it, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in response to a request for comment from Lenta.ru on Saturday.
The request concerned the latest statement of Armenian parliament deputy speaker Hakob Arshakyan, who claimed several months before the ratification of the statute, Yerevan proposed Moscow to sign an agreement enabling the country to bypass the statute requirements, but allegedly never received a response.
"The statement does not correspond to reality," the Russian ministry stated, adding Moscow had responded to Yerevan's proposal.
"During bilateral consultations, the Russian side put forward counterproposals to use the ICC mechanisms without ratifying the Rome Statute. There is such a practice. Unfortunately, our compromise solutions were ignored,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
