Armenian MP welcomes ICJ order
Pro-government MP Sargis Khandanyan welcomes the order of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) telling Azerbaijan to ensure the safety of Armenians who want to return to Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh).
The ICJ order on Armenia's request for interim measures against Azerbaijan delivered on 17 November said that Azerbaijan must ensure that people who left Nagorno-Karabakh after September 19 and wish to return “are able to do so in a safe, unimpeded, and expeditious manner.”
The UN court also said that Azerbaijan must guarantee that those Armenians who remain in Nagorno-Karabakh “are free from the use of force or intimidation that may cause them to flee”.
"I welcome the decision and I hope that it can serve as an important tool in the diplomatic and political processes," Khandanyan, who represents the ruling Civil Contract party, told reporters on Saturday.
At the same time, he highlighted that Azerbaijan failed to abide by the ICJ order to open the Lachin Corridor earlier this year.
“Unfortunately, the pressure of the international community was not enough,” the MP added.
