MP insists on security guarantees for return of Armenians to Artsakh
Opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan insists on strong security guarantees for the return of ethnic Armenians to Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).
“The return of Armenians to Artsakh should not be considered as an end in itself,” he wrote on Facebook on Wednesday. "It’s dangerous to even discuss the matter without any real security guarantees in place, as it's more like incitement to a new genocide.”
“The right to self-determination was put at the core of the Artsakh Movement from the very beginning primarily because people perfectly realized that any status of the Artsakh people within Azerbaijan posed serious security threats,” said Abrahamyan, secretary of the opposition Pativ Unem faction.
The MP stressed the process of self-determination, based on international law and the principles proclaimed by the Artsakh people, was also aimed at creating tight security guarantees to prevent the fall of Artsakh and forced displacement of its population.
“The political changes in Armenia in 2018 and, as a consequence, the rejection of the people's right to self-determination undermined those complex and delicate processes that were gradually leading to the exercise of the Artsakh people's right to self-determination," he stated.
