Pashinyan says Azerbaijan needs to clarify its position on peace deal
Azerbaijan needs to clarify its position on a peace treaty with Armenia, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Friday.
“It remains unclear whether Azerbaijan is committed to signing a peace treaty with Armenia on the basis of three principles,” he told an online press conference, adding they were agreed upon at EU-hosted meetings between Yerevan and Baku.
The three basic principles include the mutual recognition of each other's territorial integrity based on the maps of the USSR General Staff, delimitation and demarcation of the shared border based on the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration and the unblocking of transport links in a way that respects the two countries' sovereignty and jurisdiction.
"We cannot state that Azerbaijan refuses to sign a peace agreement based on these principles, but neither can we say that it reaffirms its commitment to these principles," Pashinyan said.
"It is necessary to clarify these issues and subtleties during the negotiations," the premier added, referring to the meeting of the Armenian and Azerbaijani border commissions slated for November 30.
