Customs attaché reveals when Upper Lars border crossing will reopen
Traffic along the Gudauri-Kobi road section of the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi highway has been stalled due to a risk of blizzards and avalanches.
More than 1,600 Armenian trucks are currently stuck at the Upper Lars crossing on the Georgian-Russian border, Vahan Hakobyan, the customs attaché of the Armenian Embassy in Russia, told Panorama.am on Tuesday.
The only road connecting Armenia to Russia passes through the Upper Lars checkpoint in North Ossetia.
The customs attaché said heavy snowfalls blocked all traffic through the Jvari Pass on Sunday and Monday, adding snow removal operations were underway.
“They promise that the road will reopen to passenger vehicles in the afternoon. After additional cleaning, truck traffic along the road may resume later today or on Wednesday morning,” the official said.
"Everything depends on the speed of the snow removal operations and the decision of the Georgian authorities when they consider that the road is safe and passable for trucks," Hakobyan added.
