Armenian opposition mayor ousted
The ruling Civil Contract party voted to oust the opposition mayor of Alaverdi, a major community in Armenia’s Lori Province.
14 pro-government members of the Alaverdi council expressed a lack of confidence in Mayor Arkady Tamazyan at a meeting on Tuesday.
The municipal council also installed Civil Contract’s David Ghumashyan as new mayor of Alaverdi.
His swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for December 8.
A large group of people gathered outside the municipality building to show support for Tamazyan, who claimed the no-confidence vote was held in violation of the law.
