Opposition MP accuses Armenia's ruling party of retribution against opponents
Opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan has accused Armenia’s ruling Civil Contract party of a “revenge policy” towards its opponents through arrests.
Abrahamyan, secretary of the opposition Pativ Unem faction, took to Facebook on Wednesday to denounce the Anti-Corruption Court’s refusal to release former Vanadzor Mayor Mamikon Aslanyan.
Aslanyan was arrested on charges of abuse of power and forgery after defeating Civil Contract in the Vanadzor elections in December 2021.
“The court upheld the detention of Mamikon Aslanyan, a former Vanadzor mayor who has been jailed for two years,” the MP wrote.
He blamed the ruling team for efforts to install its members as leaders of all communities.
“After suffering a setback in the Vanadzor elections and failing to achieve its goal, the authorities are taking a revenge by keeping Mamikon in custody and depriving the Vanadzor residents of effective management," Abrahamyan added.
