Apple plans major expansion of iPhone production in India
Apple is planning to produce more than 50 million iPhones in India annually, a report has claimed, adding that the company aims to reach this number within the next two to three years. The move is important as the Tim Cook-led company works to move some manufacturing away from China amid tensions between Washington and Beijing, The Times of India said.
Citing people involved, a report by the Wall Street Journal claims that if Apple’s plans are achieved, India would account for a quarter of global iPhone production.
The company aims to build additional tens of millions of units planned after taking further share toward the end of the decade. China will remain the largest iPhone producer.
The development comes as a separate report by Bloomberg claimed that Tata Group is planning to build a manufacturing plant to manufacture iPhones. The report also claimed that the facility will have 50,000 workers on about 20 assembly lines and the site will become operational in the next 12 to 18 months.
Foxconn and Apple have been engaged in a significant partnership in India, as the iPhone maker looks to diversify its manufacturing capabilities and expand market presence in the country. Apple's plans also align with India’s ambitions to become a major hub for electronics manufacturing.
