Expert accuses int’l community of ignoring human rights violations in Armenia
Constitutional law expert Gohar Meloyan has warned of recurrent human rights violations in Armenia and accused the international community of turning a blind eye to them.
“It’s a disgrace that the international organizations turn a blind eye to violations of fundamental human rights due to various political arrangements with the incumbent authorities,” Meloyan told a discussion hosted by the Alternative Projects Group on Friday.
She dismissed the Armenian government’s claims about the high level of human rights protection in the country.
The expert pointed to arrests of people for pubic posts on social media, as well as the large number of political prisoners who are facing prosecution for the “exercise of their fundamental right to free speech.”
Meloyan recalled the government pressure on the Constitutional Court, adding the Supreme Judicial Council “is becoming a tool to punish judges.”
