Five killed in German hospital fire
Five persons lost their lives in a fire at a hospital in Uelzen, south of the German city of Hamburg, a police spokesperson confirmed on Friday evening, The Brussels Times reported.
Three victims passed away at the scene of the fire, on Thursday night, while another succumbed after being transported to a different hospital. A fifth individual failed to survive their injuries and died in hospital on Friday afternoon, the spokesperson said.
According to the hospital, six other individuals suffered severe injuries, with another 16 sustaining light to moderate ones.
The fire reportedly started around 10:45 pm local time on Thursday. When emergency responders arrived, flames were visible on the third floor, and spread swiftly through various rooms.
Substantial rescue efforts were required, with 140 emergency service personnel deployed.
The cause of the fire, which was quickly brought under control, remains unknown.
