Current Armenian leaders' rule 'guarantees' Azerbaijan's growing influence, MP says
Armenian opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan has reacted to the U.S. report which added Azerbaijan to a religious freedom watchlist for engaging in or tolerating “severe violations of religious freedom” after Baku took over Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).
In a social media post on Monday, Abrahamyan, who represents the opposition Pativ Unem faction, accused the international community of “turning a blind eye” to or “forgiving” Azerbaijan’s war crimes committed after 2020.
"It’s worth noting that the Azerbaijan propaganda machine has made a big fuss over the matter, blaming the U.S. and specifically Secretary of State Antony Blinken for the wording used in the report,” the MP wrote.
“Azerbaijan is trying to create the impression that the recent successes were achieved exclusively due to President Ilham Aliyev’s efforts, whereas it was clear from the very beginning that without the active involvement of Turkey and the silence of geopolitical actors, Baku would not have been able to make any serious progress.
“The continued rule of the current Armenian leaders guarantees Azerbaijan's increasing influence and strengthening of its interests, while the other factors are its derivatives," Abrahamyan noted.
