RPA slams court order to extend Armen Ashotyan's detention
The former ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) has denounced the court order to extend the detention of its deputy chairman, Armen Ashotyan, rejecting the "fabricated charges" against him.
The Anti-Corruption Court on Monday extended Ashotyan’s arrest by three more months, rejecting the defense lawyers’ petition to release him on bail or move him to house arrest. Around a dozen politicians offered personal guarantees for his release.
Ashotyan, a vocal government critic who served as Armenia’s education minister from 2012-2016, was arrested on 16 June on charges of abuse of power and money laundering strongly denied by him as politically motivated.
“The January 8 court hearing has confirmed that Armen Ashotyan is facing political persecution,” the RPA said in a statement on Wedesday, accusing the court of acting on the Armenian authorities' orders.
"Authoritarianism is growing further in Armenia despite the authorities' unsuccessful attempts to portray it as a 'bastion of democracy' in the South Caucasus," it added.
