Ukraine exonerates Sergei Parajanov 50 years after Soviet trial
Ukraine’s National Commission for Rehabilitation has officially exonerated renowned Armenia filmmaker Sergei Parajanov 50 years after his Soviet trial.
In 1973, the Soviet authorities accused Parajanov of "Ukrainian nationalism and homosexuality" and sentenced him to five years in strict regime camps.
The decision states that after a detailed analysis of the criminal case and other archival documents, a political motive was identified in the prosecution and conviction of the film director, the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance reported.
Its director, Anton Drobovich, hailed Parajanov's exoneration as a “landmark” event.
"It is yet another evidence that goodness and justice will prevail in the end, even in a strategic perspective," he said.
