Armenian opposition leader rejects 'fake' peace agenda
Parliamentary opposition leader Seyran Ohanyan has dismissed the “fake” peace agenda promoted by the Armenian authorities.
“The claims of our faction and the political forces comprising it have now been proven true,” Ohanyan, the head of the largest opposition Hayastan faction in the Armenian parliament, told reporters on Monday.
“After achieving victory in 2020, the Turkish-Azerbaijani tandem continues to put pressure on Armenia. The peace agenda is fictitious, it’s an illusion for Armenia,” he stated.
The opposition leader believes there can be no peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, as the Armenian authorities are under pressure after suffering a war defeat.
"It looks like we are begging for peace, while the enemy is imposing it on us. Therefore, Aliyev's rhetoric has not changed and he keeping putting forward new demands," Ohanyan noted.
He says for Azerbaijan and Turkey the so-called "Zangezur corridor" is about unblocking of infrastructures, while for Armenia it is about security guarantees for the whole of Syunik Province.
"Our colleagues have familiarized themselves with the 'draft peace treaty'. It makes no mention of the commitments that Azerbaijan has to undertake. It includes no provision on the border delimitation and demarcation and says nothing about the withdrawal of Azerbaijani troops from the sovereign territory of Armenia," Ohanyan said.
