The military and political situation in the South Caucasus may sharply escalate, Armenian opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan says, referring to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s latest remarks.

“Azerbaijan has made it clear that it will achieve everything that cannot be gained peacefully by military means,” the deputy told reporters on Monday.

Abrahamyan, secretary of the opposition Pativ Unem faction, claims the ongoing negotiation process may lead to bigger territorial concessions by Armenia, adding fresh military provocations by Azerbaijan are also not ruled out.

“The recent developments, as well as the statements and comments from Yerevan and Baku suggest that the situation could change dramatically, the military and political situation may sharply escalate," the opposition MP stated.

He pointed to Azerbaijan’s attempts to the remove the issue of border delimitation and demarcation, as well as the provision on unblocking regional communications from the bilateral peace treaty.

"These are two key points of the Armenian-Azerbaijani negotiations, the third one was the Artsakh issue, which Azerbaijan tried to resolve through war, while the Armenian authorities are trying to show that this page is closed," the MP said.

“In the current situation, a document may be signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan at some stage to give people the impression that peace and stability will finally come to the region. But if the two points are left out of the document, it means the threats will persist and could lead to escalations, including the outbreak of new war, at any moment,” Abrahamyan added.
