993 Armenians missing since 1990s, commission says
The Armenian government's Interagency Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons has denied Azerbaijan's allegations that Armenia refuses to provide information on missing Azerbaijani citizens.
In a statement shared by the National Security Service on Saturday, the commission said that since November 2020, Armenia “has handed dover to Azerbaijan topographic materials obtained from Nagorno-Karabakh representatives regarding the possible locations of the bodies of 51 Azerbaijanis killed in the 44-day war, as well as the bodies of around 50 people who died in the 1990s.”
In addition, the remains of 140 Azerbaijanis killed in the 1990s were handed over to Azerbaijan after they were transferred by Nagorno-Karabakh representatives.
“It is worth recalling that 993 citizens of the Republic of Armenia and Karabakh Armenians have been reported missing since the early 1990s, during and after the 44-day war in 2020 and the Republic of Armenia is seriously interested in finding out their fates," the statement said.
The commission offered the competent Azerbaijani authorities to intensify cooperation in line with the 7 December 2023 joint statement by the Armenian prime minister’s office and the Azerbaijani presidential administration.
