Doctor warns of increase in thyroid cancer incidence among women in Armenia

An average of 8,000 new cases of cancer are recorded in Armenia annually leading to around 5,000 fatalities, oncologist-surgeon Artur Avetisyan, the deputy director of Yerevan’s National Center of Oncology after Fanarjyan, said on Thursday.

Speaking at a news conference, the doctor highlighted that cancer remained a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 5 million deaths.

He reported a decrease in the death rates of some cancer types, including breast, colon and cervical cancers, in developed countries.

Avetisyan said lung and other respiratory cancers remain common among men in Armenia, while women are mostly diagnosed with breast cancer.

"Prostate cancer cases among men tend to grow, while an increase in thyroid cancer incidence among women has been recorded,” he noted, adding its mortality rates are very low and treatment produces good results.
