Investigators seek detention of Armenian parliament speaker's sister-in-law
Investigators have asked a court in Yerevan to allow them to hold parliament speaker Alen Simonyan's sister-in-law in detention.
Ani Gevorgyan, the wife of the speaker’s brother Karlen Simonyan, was reportedly arrested on Wednesday in an investigation into corruption in the Ministry of Economy.
The Investigative Committee declined to provide any information on Gevorgyan's prosecution and arrest when contacted by Panorama.am, citing the ongoing preliminary probe.
Armenia’s Deputy Minister of Economy Ani Ispiryan and several other employees of the ministry were reportedly arrested as part of the corruption probe on Wednesday afternoon.
The Investigative Committee said in a statement that six employees of the ministry were arrested following searches in 15 locations, including the ministry building in Yerevan, as part of two criminal cases opened by it and the National Security Service (NSS).
