Opposition vows fight against transport fare increase in Yerevan
The opposition Mother Armenia faction in the Yerevan City Council has condemned the ouster of its two members, Sona Aghekyan and Narine Hayrapetyan, and National Progress faction leader Hayk Marutyan as “hideous, illegitimate and anti-democratic.”
The ruling Civil Contract faction and its coalition partner, the Republic faction, on Wednesday stripped the three opposition members of their seats in the municipal council with the help of two other councilors from the Public Voice party.
Mother Armenia highlighted in a statement that the ouster of its members came ahead of the planned public transport fare increase in the Armenian capital, saying it would be challenged in court.
The opposition bloc vowed to fight against the rise in public transport fares and other services, as well as the plans to change Armenia's Constitution.
“We will continue the steps aimed at removing Nikol Pashinyan’s government. This is a struggle for the survival of the Armenian people and statehood,” reads the statement.
