Expert: Azerbaijan will continue aggression against Armenia with renewed vigor
Azerbaijan will continue with its policy of aggression against Armenian with renewed vigor after President Ilham Aliyev’s election win, claims Varuzhan Geghamyan, a Yerevan-based expert on the Middle East and the South Caucasus.
Aliyev secured a fifth consecutive term in office after receiving around 92% of the vote in Wednesday’s snap presidential elections.
“There is nothing special about it at first sight. However, these elections were different from previous ones,” Geghamyan wrote on Facebook on Thursday.
“Given that the main goals of Aliyev's foreign and domestic policy are the stated continuous fight against Armenia and Armenians and unification with Turkey (Turkic world), his re-election gives domestic legitimacy to this Azerbaijani policy.
"Thus, Azerbaijan will continue its aggression against Armenia in full swing and with renewed vigor, seeking, first of all, to neutralize Armenia's resistance capabilities, which will facilitate its seizure of new territories (primarily in Gegharkunik, Vayots Dzor and Syunik). Peace and good-neighborly relations with Armenia are out of the question," the expert emphasized.
