Seyran Ohanyan: Aliyev uses either Western or post-Soviet platforms to promote his interests
Foreign policy is one of the directions that provides guarantees for Armenia’s security, Seyran Ohanyan, the parliamentary leader of the opposition Hayastan alliance, told reporters on Friday.
His comments came in response to a question about Armenia’s agenda amid Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s apparent willingness to resume the Brussels trilateral talks with Armenia.
Ohanyan stressed the need to agree to such meetings in line with Armenia's interests
"The current situation, especially Azerbaijan's bellicose rhetoric, the absence of key and effective provisions in the draft peace treaty, as well as Baku's attitude towards the Artsakh issue, are setting back the ongoing peace process. This suggests that the peace process on the part of Azerbaijan is a kind of deception," Ohanyan said.
The MP believes that Armenia should promote its own interests on all platforms instead of constantly bowing to Azerbaijan’s demands and making concessions.
"The Armenian side should use all platforms to achieve certain successes. And the relevant decisions have to be taken by the current authorities, since they are the ones who negotiate with Azerbaijan and maintain contacts with it. But we see that Aliyev uses either Western or post-Soviet platforms to promote his own interests,” the oppositionist said.
“He pushes his agenda on the platform that is favorable to him at a particular moment. We should participate in those meetings where Armenia's interests will be promoted," Ohanyan added.
