MP claims deployment of EU mission in Armenia triggered more tensions
The developments in the South Caucasus region have entered a rather complicated stage, claims Armenian MP Tigran Abrahamyan, the secretary of the opposition Pativ Unem parliamentary faction.
In a social media post on Friday, he attributed it to the stalemate in Armenian-Azerbaijani negotiations, as well as tough regional and geopolitical confrontation.
He stated the regional tensions dramatically escalated immediately after the deployment of the EU civilian observation mission in Armenia
“This is opposed not only by Azerbaijan, but also by neighboring Iran and Russia. Everything is clear when it comes to Azerbaijan; the presence of additional border monitoring is already a problem in itself, especially since Azerbaijan refuses to abandon its practice of using force,” the MP wrote on Facebook.
“Russia considers the deployment of EU monitors as a threat to its presence, influence and reputation. Iran, on the other hand, says that the presence of outsiders in the region is unacceptable, fearing that at some stage it could be directed against Tehran.
"When the unpredictable and untenable foreign policy of the Armenian authorities is added to this, the picture becomes more complete.
“What the EU observer mission is giving to Armenia is another question. But the fact that its deployment and expansion have triggered further tensions and uncertainty is already visible," Abrahamyan said.
