Opposition MP: Armenia heading towards new calamity
Opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan has called attention to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ “remarkable” statement at Wednesday’s meeting with his visiting Armenian counterpart Nikol Pashinyan amid strained relations between Armenia and the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).
“We also discussed the reforms taking place in Armenia, which clearly show your direction as a country of the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance, we are ready to contribute with our knowledge, experience and abilities to form a new liberal democracy,” the Armenian government quoted Mitsotakis as saying.
“I don’t necessarily think that the EU or NATO are going to welcome us with open arms, but it seems that the Armenian authorities have also made backstage promises and assurances, and it’s pretty clear what they seek to gain and give in return,” Abrahamyan, the secretary of the opposition Pativ Unem faction, wrote on Facebook on Friday.
He rejected claims about democracy in Armenia pointing to the large number of “political prisoners” held in custody or under house arrest.
“There is a lot of discussion about where Armenia is moving: Is the country heading closer to NATO, EU, or…? Armenia is heading towards a new calamity,” the MP stated.
