Army chief: Armenia hasn't quitted CSTO yet
The situation along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border is characterized by relative stability, the chief of the Armenian military’s General Staff, Edward Asryan, said on Tuesday.
He visited the Yerablur Military Pantheon in Yerevan to pay tribute to legendary commander Vazgen Sargsyan on his 65th birthday anniversary.
"There is no military buildup on Armenia's borders at the moment. The Armenian armed forces are closely monitoring the movements of Azerbaijani troops. The operational situation is assessed as relatively stable," Asryan told reporters.
In response to a question about reported problems with arms deliveries from Russia, the army chief noted: "This question contains elements of confidentiality. Please submit a written request to my spokesman! I, as a military man, the General Staff chief, have no right to answer your question in these settings."
Asked what Armenia's withdrawal from the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), could lead to, Asryan said: "Armenia hasn’t yet pulled out of the CSTO and a response to the question about its possible consequences also includes confidential information."
Also, the military chief said that the investigation of the incident near the village of Nerkin Hand in mid-February had not been finalized yet. "A statement will be issued upon its completion," Asryan added.
