Edmon Marukyan slams Azerbaijan's destruction of Artsakh parliament building
Armenia’s former Ambassador-at-Large Edmon Marukyan has denounced Azerbaijan's destruction of the Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) parliament building and urged the Armenian authorities to raise the issue before international community.
"In the light of all the international obligations of Azerbaijan, this destruction in Stepanakert is unacceptable. It violates the fundamental rights of the Armenian people of Nagorno Karabakh," he wrote on X on Wednesday, posting a video.
"Essentially, these violations started in 2020 with 44 day war and are considered to be continuing violations against the indigenous Armenian people of Nagorno Karabakh. Naturally, the international community will ignore all of this too and will not react in any way, despite the fact that the Azerbaijani atrocities fall under the prohibitions defined in the Convention on the Prevention of the Crime of Genocide," the politician stated.
"Meanwhile, in order for that reaction to take place, first it is necessary for the Republic of Armenia to raise this issue before international community including Russia, the USA, France, and the EU and work towards stopping this disaster and start discussions for restoring the violated fundamental rights of the Armenian people of Nagorno Karabakh.
"The right to safe return to Nagorno Karabakh, the rights and security of the Karabakh Armenians, the right to property, to access and enjoy cultural heritage and all other rights must be guaranteed by international mechanisms.
"If the Republic of South Africa may initiate a lawsuit against Israel in the International Court of Justice and try to protect the rights of the Palestinians, then Armenia may definitely be able to initiate such a lawsuit against Azerbaijan protecting the rights of the Armenian people of Nagorno Karabakh. We must act as soon as possible otherwise Azerbaijan will erase all the symbols of dignified return of the Armenian people of Nagorno Karabakh," Marukyan said.
