Opposition councilors call for protest against transport fare hike in Yerevan
Opposition members of Yerevan's City Council urge people to take to the streets to protest against the planned drastic increase in public transport fares in Yerevan.
Opposition Mother Armenia faction members Mesrop Manukyan and Gevorg Stepanyan said the Yerevan city authorities discussed the controversial bill on Thursday and seek to push it through at the March 12 sitting of the Yerevan municipal council.
If approved, passengers in the Armenian capital will have to pay almost three times higher than current prices based on their choice of payment plans. They will be offered daily, weekly, monthly or annual plans.
The opposition councils rejected the proposed price hike as “completely groundless” and called for public pressure to stop it.
“Public pressure is necessary. Their claims that the costs are too high to cover are totally groundless,” Manukyan said in a video on social media.
