Political analyst: Conflict between Iran and Azerbaijan inevitable
Political analyst Stepan Danielyan believes a conflict between Iran and Azerbaijan is inevitable amid Baku’s anti-Iranian sentiments.
“Azerbaijan creates the same problems for Iran as Ukraine does for Russia. The state policies of Ukraine and Azerbaijan are anchored on nationalism, taking extreme forms based on hate propaganda,” he wrote on Facebook on Friday.
“While Ukraine believes that Russian statehood originated in Kiev, Azerbaijan believes that the Turks united Iran, on the ruins of historical Iran, which collapsed after the Arab invasions in the 7th century, while before that, Turkic tribes ruled there, alleging they are the state-building ethnos in Iran.
“Russia and Iran are multinational empires, while Azerbaijan and Ukraine are areas of nationalism. Ukraine became anti-Russian and Azerbaijan became anti-Iranian. These are conflicts of empires and nationalist projects, which are incompatible in nature.
“The conflict between Iran and Azerbaijan is predetermined, it just remains to be seen when it will occur and what forces will be involved," Danielyan noted.
