Yerevan court extends Armen Ashotyan's detention
The Anti-Corruption Court in Yerevan on Thursday extended opposition politician Armen Ashotyan’s detention for three more months.
“The court deems it expedient to extend the detention period by another three months until June 15,” presiding judge Vahe Dolmazyan announced at today’s hearing.
Ashotyan, a vocal government critic and deputy chairman of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) who served as Armenia’s education minister from 2012-2016, was arrested on 16 June 2023 on charges of abuse of power and money laundering strongly denied by him as politically motivated.
The court rejected the sureties offered by 30 opposition lawmakers to release Ashotyan and scheduled the next court hearing for April 16.
After the judge announced the decision, those present at the courtroom started chanting “Shame! Shame!”.
