Freedom House concerned by reports of police violence in Armenia
Freedom House has expressed concern over mounting reports of police violence in Armenia.
“We urge Armenian authorities to investigate this pattern of excessive force and inhumane treatment and work with civil society to foster and implement meaningful reform,” the Washington-based non-profit group said in a post on X on Tuesday.
The statement came after Samvel Vardanyan, an Armenian government critic, was beaten by a group of masked men while being transported to a detention center in Yerevan last week.
Separately, police officers on Tuesday brutally detained more than 20 people who blocked a road leading to the Bagratashen checkpoint to protest against the land handover to Azerbaijan.
