Armenian opposition leader decries border delimitation with Azerbaijan
Seyran Ohanyan, a former defense minister leading the opposition Hayastan faction in the Armenian parliament, called out the ruling Civil Contract party for the border delimitation and demarcation with Azerbaijan in Armenia’s Tavush Province in violation of international norms.
Speaking at a parliament session on Friday, Ohanyan accused his pro-government colleagues of neglecting the border delimitation and demarcation issues raised by the opposition.
"In fact, if we had held special hearings or a session to put the border delimitation and demarcation process on a legal track in 2021, and illegal border delimitation had not been carried out following Azerbaijan’s occupation of Armenian territories, now we would not find ourselves in a situation where Azerbaijan is delimiting the border by our forces and with the consent of the Armenian government leader,” Ohanyan remarked.
The MP emphasized the delimitation and demarcation in Tavush violated all procedures and principles enshrined in an OSCE document.
"After the ongoing border delimitation and demarcation, you will bite your elbows because the borders formed in the Soviet era are not realistic and do not correspond to natural geographical barriers. If you do not take all this into account during the delimitation and demarcation process, it will trigger escalations and aggression by the enemy in the future. Meanwhile, you, the pro-government majority, have not prepared the Armenian military and border guards to resist the enemy's aggression," Ohanyan said.
