Writer voices support for protest movement in Armenia
Protesters led by Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan of the Tavush Diocese marched to the Writers' Union of Armenia in Yerevan on Monday afternoon.
Addressing thousands of people at a rally in Yerevan’s central Republic Square on Sunday, the senior cleric, who is leading a protest movement against the Armenian government’s territorial concessions to Azerbaijan, called for more acts of civil disobedience on May 13, urging students and workers to boycott classes and jobs.
Writer and publicist Khachik Manukyan, a member of the Writers' Union of Armenia whose son was killed in the 2020 Artsakh war, voiced support for the protest movement, saying the union members were looking forward to meeting the cleric.
"I’m not saying that writers share the same viewpoints. Everyone has their own opinions and whims, but I say, let's see what's going on,” Manukyan told Panorama.am.
"The archbishop seeks to bring reconciliation. He sees that our disunity can be used against us in the midst of geopolitical turmoil and now he is doing everything he can to put an end to this internal disunity and consolidate society around higher values," the writer stated.
