Human rights activists slam 'baseless' detention of Tavush movement supporters
Human rights activists have denounced the Armenian authorities for the “absolutely baseless” detention of supporters of the Tavush for the Homeland protest movement.
In a statement on Wednesday, they said at least five active supporters of the movement, including war veteran Ishkhan Gevorgyan, a member of the Azatazen NGO, were detained for 72 hours last night.
Lawyer Varazdat Harutyunyan has assumed the defense of the detainees.
“The citizens were arrested on suspicion of illegal possession of weapons, which was not confirmed after their inspection. Nevertheless, the men were detained instead of being released from custody,” the lawyers said, calling for accountability for the law enforcement officers who ordered the unlawful detention.
