Tavush movement reiterates call for rally in central Yerevan
The Tavush for the Homeland protest movement led by Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan has denounced the Armenian authorities for plans to restrict the movement of people and vehicles in central Yerevan for an event on the sidelines of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) annual meeting.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is expected to address the EBRD Board of Governors’ opening session at Yerevan’s Opera House on Wednesday.
The Tavush movement has called for a rally in Liberty Square outside the Opera House at 4 p.m. to again protest against Pashinyan’s decision to unilaterally cede territories to Azerbaijan.
“Some reports suggest that the work of cafes adjacent to Liberty Square is also being suspended. All this best indicates the fears of the Armenian ruling regime and its leader,” the movement said in a statement.
“The rally is aimed at showing the whole world and the guests arriving in Armenia from different countries that the Armenian prime minister has no legitimacy in the country to surrender territories and has to rely on large police forces to move around the city,” reads the statement.
The Tavush protest movement again urged supporters to begin marching to Liberty Square for the rally from four locations, including the Martiros Saryan Park, Yerevan Conservatory Park, St. Anna Church yard and Northern Avenue.
