Yerevan court orders Stepanakert mayor's detention
A first instance court in Yerevan on Monday ordered a 20-day detention for Davit Sargsyan, the mayor of Artsakh’s capital Stepanakert.
His Lawyer Roman Yeritsyan said that presiding judge Martin Arzumanyan partially granted the investigator’s motion which sought a two-month detention for the mayor.
Armenia’s Investigative Committee said in a statement that Sargsyan was prosecuted for fraud and forgery offences committed jointly with other persons.
The lawyer rejected the charges as politically motivated, saying they were attributed to his support for the protest movement in Armenia.
It came after Martakert Mayor Misha Gyurjyan was detained last week, while Askeran Mayor Hayk Shamiryan was placed under house arrest.
