Protesters led by Archbishop Bagrat march to Interior Ministry
People led by Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan marched towards the building of Armenia’s Interior Ministry in Yerevan on Wednesday morning, seeking explanations over the incident involving the Armenian church leader at the Sardarapat Memorial.
Riot police attempted to stop Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II and many other clergymen from visiting the war memorial on Tuesday as Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan led an official ceremony there to mark the 106th anniversary of the first independent Armenian republic.
“Everyone in the country must bear responsibility and answer for their actions and statements,” the archbishop said, addressing supporters at the courtyard of St. Anna Church before they began the march.
The protest leader sought clarification on whether the entry ban was ordered by Police Chief Vahe Ghazaryan or his superiors.
The Tavush for the Homeland movement led by Archbishop Bagrat opposes the Armenian government’s unilateral territorial concessions to Azerbaijan and demands Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s resignation.
