28 protesters detained in Yerevan
Armenian police detained 28 protesters outside the Foreign Ministry building in Yerevan on Friday, the country's Investigative Committee reported.
The protesters led by Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan marched to the Armenian Foreign Ministry to demand a meeting with Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.
"On May 31, between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., a group of people participating in acts of civil disobedience used violence against police officers as they attempted to break through the police cordon and enter the Foreign Ministry building. The demonstrators hurled stones, water bottles, smoke bombs and other objects at the police. Some of them called for seizing the building," the committee said in a statement.
"Police officers took necessary measures, resulting in the detention of 28 people. The Investigative Committee’s major crimes department launched an investigation into participation in mass riots under Article 327 of the Penal Code," it added.
As a result of the clashes, seven police officers and several demonstrators sought medical care.
