MP Abrahamyan: Law enforcement officers must realize they won’t escape responsibility
Opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan called out the international community for silence on the Armenian government’s crackdown on protesters in Yerevan.
“The Armenian government would not resort to such illegality if they were not encouraged and supported by some international actors and organizations that use the issues of democracy and human rights to achieve their geopolitical goals,” the deputy wrote on Facebook on Saturday, referring to Friday’s police violence against protesters near the Armenian Foreign Ministry.
Abrahamyan, who represents the opposition Pativ Unem faction, highlighted that Armenia's third President Serzh Sargsyan used the phrase “disproportionate support” to describe the situation, which “reveals the whole essence of the problem.”
“Moreover, Serzh Sargsyan also clearly states that the problem is more complicated that it seems. It’s apparently a domestic political issue, but the conduct of international actors should be viewed in the geopolitical context.
“However, law enforcement officers have to realize that if they are given carte blanche for illegal actions now, it will not exempt them from legal responsibility in the future,” the MP wrote.
