Archbishop Bagrat announces trip to Vardenis on Wednesday
Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, the leader of the Tavush for the Homeland movement, announced plans to travel to Vardenis, a border community in Armenia’s Gegharkunik Province, on Wednesday.
“A rally is scheduled to be held in Sotk at 6pm,” he told supporters outside St. Anna Church in central Yerevan after leading a march to the ombudsperson’s office on Tuesday.
The archbishop denounced the human rights defender for denying a meeting with him and several other protesters and promised to speak to it at a rally later on Tuesday evening.
Archbishop Bagrat introduced to his supporters YSU Physics Faculty student Arman Sargsyan, who had a mark of a police boot on his forehead. He was among dozens of others who faced police brutality while protesting outside the Armenian Foreign Ministry on May 31.
“The marks are still visible. Of course, they were much more visible and horrible when we visited him in the hospital shortly after the incident. They kicked him in the face. Does the ombudsperson have anything to say on it?” the archbishop said, also pointing to the police violence against a deacon of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
