Armenian reporter beaten up by police at protest near parliament
Police officers brutally attacked and beat up reporter and political analyst Abraham Gasparyan at a protest outside the Armenian parliament on Wednesday.
He was among 101 people, including civilians and police officers, who sought medical care after police used stun grenades and other special means against demonstrators demanding Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s resignation.
Gasparyan, director of the Genesis Armenia think tank, was hospitalized with multiple injuries, including fractured ribs, in the wake of the police violence, his wife, Ani Harutyunyan, told Aysor.am on Thursday.
"He was hit in the chest and head and was taken to a police station with a bleeding head instead of being hospitalized," the woman said, adding that the violence was used by the special police forces, who assaulted the journalist in large numbers.
Gasparyan was brought to the police station without shoes.
The Human Rights Defender’s Office did not immediately respond to the attack on the reporter.
Earlier, Arpi Harutyunyan posted a photo with her spouse on Facebook, writing: "We are in the Izmirlian Medical Center, He has brain concussion, multiple bruises of soft tissues. CT scan results will be revealed soon.”
