Lawyer responds to U.S. Embassy statement on protests in Yerevan
Lawyer Gevorg Danielyan called out the U.S. Embassy in Armenia for failure to condemn the police crackdown on peaceful protesters in Yerevan on Wednesday, which left over 100 civilians and police officers wounded.
In a statement on the ongoing demonstrations in Yerevan on Thursday, the U.S. Embassy urged protestors to “responsibly exercise their right to freedom of assembly by eschewing violence.”
“The democratic process is the way to resolve political disputes. We also encourage law enforcement authorities to maintain order in a manner that upholds citizens' rights to freedom of expression and assembly, and to investigate any incidents in which procedures may have been violated, including with regards to journalists covering demonstrations," reads the statement.
“The U.S. ambassador urged peaceful protesters to be responsible and tacitly encouraged the police,” Danielyan wrote on Facebook on Friday.
“Despite the provocateurs’ efforts, peaceful protesters and protest organizers managed to prevent more devastating scenarios,” he said.
“I wonder whether the American people share their ambassador’s view and whether they are striving for such a democracy,” the lawyer added.
