Archbishop says Armenian church not involved in protest movement
Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, the leader of the Tavush for the Homeland protest movement, rejects the Armenian leaders’ claims that the movement is spearheaded by Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II.
“The Mother See of the Armenian Apostolic Church has condemned the violence against protesters, but the church, as an institution, has absolutely no involvement in this movement,” he told a news conference on Wednesday.
“Given that the church cannot be politically active, I made a personal decision, asking the supreme patriarch to suspend my service. He told me it was for me to decide,” Galstanyan stated, adding the Mother See had some concerns about his involvement in the movement.
