Azeri president dissolves parliament
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed an executive order on the dissolution of the country's parliament on Friday.
The order was published on the presidential website, Interfax reported.
Aliyev has scheduled early parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan for September 1.
The Azerbaijani parliament asked the president to schedule early parliamentary elections at a plenary meeting on June 21 at the initiative of the ruling New Azerbaijan party. Azerbaijan is due to hold its next parliamentary elections in early November 2024. However, Baku will host the COP29 climate conference that month. "We believe it would be reasonable to dissolve parliament and announce early parliamentary elections under these circumstances," ruling party deputy chair Tair Budagov said earlier.
The Azerbaijani Constitutional Court held a plenary meeting on June 27 at Aliyev's request and found the dissolution of parliament and early parliamentary elections to be constitutional.
