Iranian citizens go to polls in Yerevan to elect new president
Iranian citizens are heading to polls in Yerevan to vote in a snap election to replace the late president.
Iran began voting on Friday morning for a new president following the death of Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash last month.
Four candidates are vying for the presidency, including Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Saeed Jalili, Masoud Pezeshkian and Mostafa Pourmohammadi.
If no candidate wins at least 50 percent plus one vote from all ballots cast, including blank votes, a run-off between the top two candidates is to be held on the first Friday after the election result is declared
Iranians can cast their ballots at two polling stations in Yerevan, including at the Iranian Embassy and the Blue Mosque.
Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani called the election “decisive” for Iran's future after casting his vote.
“This is Iran's 14th presidential election which indicates that the Iranian government is based on the decision of its people. Today, we are voting for a strong, progressive, happy and developed Iran,” he told reporters.
